A Glimpse into the Life of a New Immigrant at This Time

Can you imagine coming to a new country and after only four months have everything shut down because of a virus?

That is what happened to my new friend a young woman from Cameroon. She came here from France last October after winning a Green Card Lottery. She has dreams of becoming a nurse one day. She had just completed her Certified Nursing Assistant course and then everything shut down.

She works in an assembly job for now, but can’t really go interview for a CNA job because of the shutdown.

The first time I spoke with her was when she started one of my online ESL classes. She entered before the others, so we had a chance to chat for a while. Her life for now is go to work at her assembly job and return home. She hadn’t been here long enough to make many friends before the virus shutdown hit. She does have a few friends from Cameroon living here, but she misses that feeling of community.

Yesterday she smiled when I dropped off books for her. She doesn’t have much money because she just got a car and needs to get insurance and get her car licensed, so I bought her books for her. We stayed socially distance when I dropped off her books, but to see her smile made it worth it.

She is a Christian and she knows what I am going to tell her before we say goodbye when we talk. She said it as soon as I said-“Remember.” She said-“Jesus loves me”

Just a glimpse into the life of a newcomer to America at this time.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. I have a friend….she was the leader of the prayer group in my church until she moved away 2 years ago. Every time she seen me, we would chat, pray etc etc….but she always parted ways with this sentence…..”Jesus loves you”.
Up until 4 years ago it was just a goodbye greeting to me…..but I got addicted to it and when we ended a conversation I would just wait for her to say these words. They do bring a certain calm and peace….even in the midst of a storm πŸ™‚
I think you’re probably just like my friend Berlin who is such a beautiful soul….going around sharing and reflecting the love and nature of God with everyone….
So today I wnat to be the one to remind you about something you know very very very well already….but here goes….
JESUS LOVES YOU BROTHER MATT……….SOOOOOOO MUCH

  2. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into this sister’s life. It’s something I had not really fully thought about for new immigrants. I pray she continues to find comfort in Jesus. I am glad you’re in a position to give her encouragement. Blessings to you, Matt!

  3. Wow 😳 praise God for the relationship she has with the Lord. I do pray for her, I can imagine being here without people I can easily talk to, will pray for her. I remember when I first arrived here, years ago, I missed my family, even though I had the girls and Benny here with me. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I did not know that those green card lottery work. I thought that they were scams. It is sad that she had to encounter these unprecedented circumstances, but the good new is that she is in the USA. I heard that your president is suspending the immigration program. Is that true?
I am also glad that she has you as a friend. I would love to have you as a teacher and friend if I was in her shoes. You are a blessing.

    1. Thank you little sister. You are so kind.
The Green Card Lottery is through the U.S. Government through the embassies.

Immigration is suspended for now as is all travel to and from the USA

  5. Thanks for being a blessing to her big bro. I believe she will look back at everything and be reminded of God’s faithfulness in it all. Greetings to her. πŸ€—
