Can you imagine coming to a new country and after only four months have everything shut down because of a virus?

That is what happened to my new friend a young woman from Cameroon. She came here from France last October after winning a Green Card Lottery. She has dreams of becoming a nurse one day. She had just completed her Certified Nursing Assistant course and then everything shut down.
She works in an assembly job for now, but can’t really go interview for a CNA job because of the shutdown.

The first time I spoke with her was when she started one of my online ESL classes. She entered before the others, so we had a chance to chat for a while. Her life for now is go to work at her assembly job and return home. She hadn’t been here long enough to make many friends before the virus shutdown hit. She does have a few friends from Cameroon living here, but she misses that feeling of community.
Yesterday she smiled when I dropped off books for her. She doesn’t have much money because she just got a car and needs to get insurance and get her car licensed, so I bought her books for her. We stayed socially distance when I dropped off her books, but to see her smile made it worth it.
She is a Christian and she knows what I am going to tell her before we say goodbye when we talk. She said it as soon as I said-“Remember.” She said-“Jesus loves me”
Just a glimpse into the life of a newcomer to America at this time.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
