After reading a prayer attributed to Patrick of Ireland one day, I typed I Arise Today into the search in youtube and found this video I want to share today. I loved it the first time I watched it and still do. I like to listen to it especially on Monday mornings when I can barely open my eyes. I enjoy listening to it as I drink my morning coffee because if helps me remember I can go out to my day with the strength of Jesus not my own.
I prefer to listen to this version because it is a simple video of a young lady singing to God. I have not found any new songs on her site, so I am not sure if she is still performing, but she has a beautiful voice.
Yes, I listen to music from the Catholic tradition even though I am not Catholic. Why? Because there is a richness to some of the music just as there is to old hymns we sadly do not sing much in churches anymore. Our heritage as Christians goes back to the death and resurrection of Jesus and sometimes I think we ignore our ancient brothers and sisters such as Patrick who lived about 1,600 years ago.
So here is the video and under it a prayer attributed to Patrick of Ireland. God Bless and remember Jesus is with us even on a Monday. 🙂
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.
I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me;
God’s might to uphold me,
God’s wisdom to guide me,
God’s eye to look before me,
God’s ear to hear me,
God’s word to speak for me,
God’s hand to guard me,
God’s way to lie before me,
God’s shield to protect me,
God’s hosts to save me
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.
Christ shield me today
Against wounding
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.
I arise today Through the mighty strength Of the Lord of creation.
