It is no secret that I am perhaps one of the worst cooks alive. It’s okay with me and I feel no shame about it. Embracing the fact comically has actually helped me connect with students and with people I reach out to in ministry.

In August 2010, I organized a lunch for college students from my church to meet international students. One of the international students was Alex from China. Alex is an excellent cook, so the group of Chinese students that came to my Sunday morning group always wanted Alex to cook. He made an egg and tomato dish that I loved, so I asked him to cook some in the church kitchen along with some other foods. I decided to “help” with the cooking process. I cracked open on egg and oops it slipped onto the counter top. I was ordered out of the kitchen.

He kicked me out. 🙂 Everyone had a good laugh and I even tried going back into the kitchen only to be told to stay out.

That was an unplanned ice breaker for the afternoon as I got to know the new Chinese students that came. It was totally okay with me that they joked about my cooking and in fact more than okay. Why?

By letting others in whether through humorous moments or serious ones, friendships form. Through friendship I can learn about the person and share with the person. The popular phrase for this is ‘being real.’

Jesus let others in by letting them be with him as he ministered to people. He shared what was on his heart and mind with those close to him especially before his week of suffering. Our God is a highly relational God.

Thanks for reading my blog today. God Bless 🙂

Oh and one more thing- Who wants me to cook for them? 🙂
