Each Saturday for me brings a new unique experience for me and yesterday was a wonderful example of how blessed I am to enjoy so many different cultures here in my home city. Yesterday I had the privilege of going to the wedding of a young woman from Guatemala, Edna, who was my student in ESL classes a few years ago.

The wedding ceremony was beautiful. The wedding was at a Spanish speaking Catholic church here in Lincoln, Cristo Rey. It was in both Spanish and English. I appreciated that the priest explained the parts of the ceremony that are from many Hispanic cultures such as the exchanging of coins to symbolize that whatever the bride and groom had before and now for both of them and also the string of beads put around the shoulders to show that they are now bound together in marriage.

For me the best part was to see my former student beaming with joy because of her special day. She looked so beautiful in her gown. It is such a blessing for me to be able to see my former students be blessed in life. The young man she married is a good man, so I am confident they will have a good future together.
One pleasant surprise was to see another former student of mine, Kim, at the wedding. In fact Kim and Edna were in my class together, which is how they met. Kim was one of the bride’s maids. I sat with Kim and her husband at the reception.

Seeing both Edna and Kim on the same day reminded me of how they used to sit together in my classes smiling. Life goes on and Kim and her husband will move out of state soon and Edna and her husband will be busy with their new lives, but I am so grateful to share moments like Edna’s beautiful wedding and reception to see how blessed both of them are. It reminds me of why I teach. I teach ESL to show people the love of God and to help them build their new lives in America.
