There is a line from a song I love by John Michael Talbot that says, “Christ has no hands on earth but yours.”
Being the hands of Jesus on earth means showing his love in practical ways, meeting the needs of others, and caring enough to connect with people.
Every Sunday when I come to church, something that always gets my attention are the food donation barrels. They represent a wonderful focus of sharing the love of Christ by meeting needs. For me they symbolize the overall commitment to doing so.
I have been blessed by the support of my church as I reach out to refugees and immigrants. We also have respite nights of fun for kids with special needs, so the parents can have a break. These are just two examples of meeting the needs of people.
In this time of so much uncertainty and at times chaotic circumstances around us, it really is time for the church to be the hands of Jesus on earth. There is a hurting world out there starving for what we have to share but how we share can either turn people off to our message about Jesus or attract them to Jesus.
A meme I saw captures my thought regarding being the hands of Jesus on earth. It says, “you know that Love Thy Neighbor thing? I meant it”
So each Sunday a simple thing like seeing food donation barrels blesses me because I realize my church isn’t just saying be warm and filled.
