I saw a video on youtube of an eleven year old girl being surprised with the news her step-father had adopted her. It is one of those videos that tugs on ones heartstrings. It caused me to think about this passage in Romans 8 in the bible.

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba,Father.”

God’s desire is to have a father/child relationship with us. He longs for that relationship with us and went so far as to send Jesus for us. Jesus repeatedly referred to God to his followers as- “You father in heaven.”

God’s does not want us living as a slave. He doesn’t want us living in fear. He wants us to be his children and call him Abba denoting a close father child relationship.

But this also makes me think about children throughout the world who are orphans. Another repeated theme in the bible is how much God cares about orphans and his expectation that we take care of orphans. When I give what little I can to Love Justice, I know that the money will go to help children who are victims of sex trafficking  many of whom cannot return home. God passionately wants them as his children.

God wants us to be a part of the process of him adopting many many more children by sharing his love with others, sharing the good news about Jesus, and praying for others. What a privilege we have to be able to share the love of Abba-God Our Father.

Here is the video of the girl being surprised with the news of adoption. As you watched it, try to envision God adopting you. 🙂
