Take courage my heart and hold onto your hope are lyrics from a song Take Courage by Kristene DiMarco.

This life can be full of obstacles, twists and turns, and down times. For me living with autoimmune has been full of those. If my only hope was in this life, it would be very discouraging, but my hope is not in this life. My hope is in Jesus. This life can change suddenly and unexpectedly, but Jesus never changes. This life will fade away, but Jesus never will and neither will his promises to us. Jesus said in Matthew 24:

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

So as we go through this life, we can take courage in any situation knowing that Jesus is eternal and he never fails. For me that means if I wake up with pain, I can look to him for strength for the day to show his love to those he has called me to reach out to. If I didn’t sleep because of a flare up, I can look to him to carry me through the day. Some of my best experiences in teaching have been on such days that I look to him in prayer and say, “Jesus I need you to carry through today.”

We do not only believe in God. We also believe that he rewards us. Our hope is in Jesus the one who defeated death for us, AND also that he will reward us. Think of all of the moments we felt we couldn’t do something, looked to him for strength and asked him for help, then went onto to serve him. All of those moments he will reward us.

Heaven is there for us because Jesus created it and is waiting for us there, but he wants us to serve him here first. My work here is not done yet. Saturday morning I will see my friends at my ESL conversation group at my church. Sunday morning I can see people at church. Next week my classes will begin again at the college. If I give those to Jesus and ask him for strength, he will be faithful to be with me and also reward me. Hebrews 11 says:

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”

So taking hold of hope means taking hold of Jesus.
