In the summer of 1991, I was wrestling with a decision whether to stay at my position with a furniture dealership or to follow the call to step out in faith and go to a school in Minneapolis to study for the ministry.

Whatever path Jesus calls us to go on, it is a sacred journey because of the one we follow-Jesus.

If I had known all of the things I would encounter over the years to come after that, I am not sure I would have said yes, BUT as a saying goes a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

After realizing Jesus was calling me to something, my first step was to resign my position at the furniture dealership which was a promising career. I had already applied to and been accepted by the school, but that did not necessarily mean I was going. I could have decided not to go, but as soon as I gave my notice, I was committed to going.

Through all of the ups and downs, and at times it feels like more downs, a question some may ask is- “Was it worth it?” Was it worth it to go through the experience of almost dying? Was it worth it to struggle financially? Were the hardships worth it?

When Jesus calls us to follow him, we should count the costs, but the real question for me is- “Is Jesus worth it?”

My answer to that question is a definite yes and that realization is on my mind when I am with my refugee and immigrant friends because when I am with them, I feel such a connection to what Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son…..”

The journey Jesus calls on is to follow him, to show his love to others, and to share him with others. What that looks like for each of us will vary, but the call is to follow him as he guides us on the journey. That is what makes it a sacred journey.

The song Sacred Journey by First Call was a blessing for me as I prayed through the decision to step out and follow the call of Jesus and in the years after that. Here is Sacred Journey by First Call. Thanks for reading and God Bless 🙂
