As a teacher one of my greatest blessing is to see others achieve goals and experience new horizons. This week it was so encouraging to know that two people have done so.

One of my friends who comes to my Saturday morning ESL group at church began her first week of college this week. She worked diligently to improve her English and passed the placement test in May. Yesterday she started her first classes as a college student.

My assistant teacher in my Family Literacy class last year also experienced an achievement. She will have her own class in the evenings teaching a beginning ESL class. It is encouraging to see a woman in her forties try something new and excel at it. We had a lot of fun teaching together last year and I knew she would end up with her own class.

That now makes 8 of my former assistants who have gone on to teach a class of their own. Each of them has a different personality and skill set, but one thing they have in common is they have a heart for helping others.

Whether it is seeing an assistant I mentored go on to become a lead instructor or seeing a student go on to experience success in life and in college, I am mindful of how Jesus longs to empower us. Think about it. Jesus took people who no rabbi at that time would have thought to try to mentor and Jesus turned them into leaders who would change the world by starting the church. Think about the list that includes Peter who was an impulsive blue collar man a fisherman and Mary Magdalene an outcast who Jesus delivered from seven demons.

If we ever think we cannot serve God because of our past or who we are, we only need to look at who Jesus chose to be in his circle of friends and who would go on to start the church.

He took me the son of an alcoholic and turned me into an ESL teacher who mentors others and is in part-time ministry. If he can do that with me, imagine what he can do with you. 🙂

Thank you for reading my post. God Bless 🙂
