Yesterday evening I went to a wedding, but it wasn’t just a wedding for me. It was a moment to celebrate what God has done in the life of someone special to me.

In April 2009 I visited a family from Vietnam. A brother and sister had been in my morning beginning English class and as I prayed one day I felt Jesus show me to connect with them. I wasn’t sure if I called if anyone would speak enough English to communicate, so I went to their apartment and knocked on the door. The sister answered the door, smiled, and said, “Teacher.” She welcomed me in, went to another room, and returned with her daughter, son and niece. I knew then why Jesus wanted me to connect with them, That evening began a wonderful experience of helping her daughter with her English and prepare to go to the university here.
Watching her improve her English, begin college, and grow in confidence were definite highlights for me. I went with her to New Student Enrollment at the university and could see how nervous she was. She has risen high above that moment. She was diligent in her studies and this year finished her Master’s degree in Architecture. The once shy and lacking in confidence young lady has grown to be a confident successful woman.
Her wedding fit her personality perfectly with simple yet elegant decorations. The ceremony was outdoors with a pastor conducting it. When the pastor led her and her new husband through their vows, I thanked God for what he has done in her life.
She was beaming the whole evening surrounded by family and friends. It was a blessing to see the obvious joy in her smile.
It was also a moment that solidified for me what I already knew. I am no longer needed in her life because she has achieved so much, but I am glad she wants me in her life at moments like her wedding.
