What do we long for? Longing can evoke different images. A longing is a deep desire, but often we only think of it in regards to romantic involvements or things we desire. When we long for something, it consumes our thoughts. A longing can be pervasive on our minds. It can be riches, fame, relationships, the “good life”. We all have a void in our souls and spirits that sadly we try to fill with things or people.

Have you ever longed for something but you aren’t sure what it is? Like it is some undefinable thing beyond our grasp?
A man named David once wrote about what he longed for in Psalm 63:
“O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.”
We are all longing for God whether we realize it or not, or whether we want to acknowledge it or not. God created us to have a relationship with him. He longs to have a relationship with us. We thirst for God whether we admit it or not.
Think of the imagery of in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. Have you ever been so thirsty that you could not wait for a drink of water? Maybe in the summer time on a hot day. I remember as a child how good it felt to drink cold water from the hose in my yard and to splash it over my head while playing outside in the heat. Do we thirst for God as if we are in a dry land with no water?

Jesus spoke of the water he gives so that we won’t thirst anymore in John 4 while he was talking with a woman who came to a well:
“Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
He will freely give living water to anyone who comes to him. That water is the Holy Spirit. The living water fills the void we have deep in our souls and spirits. The living water satisfies the deep longing for what seemed out of our grasp.
For those of us who have come to know Jesus and have received living water, we still have times we need to be refreshed. Life happens and we can get bogged down. Disappointments come. Struggles can drag us down.
I would like to share the wonderful old song with you, As The Deer Pants For The Water. Dear reader please listen to it and let the Lord bless you. Thank you for reading and God Bless 🙂
