Last night was supposed to be the debut of the new football coach. The stadium was filled with excited fans. The coach and players came out for the game and the crowd was cheering loudly. The kickoff happened, the home team had the ball ready to start play and then suddenly the game was stopped because of a lightning strike in the area. A severe thunderstorm was approaching.

Last night about 3am loud thunder woke me up along with an extremely bright lightning strike. The storms kept coming last night one after the other. We are supposed to have more coming today and maybe tomorrow.
This has me thinking about when the storms of life come; the diagnosis from the doctor, job loss, family problems, financial problems, a car accident. The list goes on and on of possible storms of life that hit us often unexpectedly.
The disciples, followers of Jesus, had quite the experience one time in the middle of a storm. They were in a boat on the lake when a storm came upon them. They were scared, but Jesus was sleeping. Jesus was sleeping in the middle of the storm. The disciples woke him up to tell him they were going to die. Jesus rebuked the storm and everything became calm again.
Another time the disciples were on a lake fishing when a storm came. Jesus came to them walking on the water. He got in the boat and the winds died down.
So often when we are in a crisis, we can wonder where is Jesus. Our cries of desperation in prayer can feel like they fall on deaf ears because we want our answer/solution right now. In those moments, Jesus is nearer to us than we realize just like when he walked on the water to the disciples.
Jesus is always with us, but we can be like Peter who tried to walk on the water to meet Jesus. While Peter kept his eye on Jesus, he was okay walking on the water, but when he took his eye off Jesus and looked at his circumstances he began to drown. Jesus rescued him and got him in the boat.
When we live with difficulties, we have moments of faith and moments of doubt. In both Jesus is with us. Jesus has all power, so he is fully able to help us. It reminds me of the Carrie Underwood song, ‘Jesus Take the Wheel’. In distress the woman in the song cries out Jesus take the wheel. In our distress, crying out to Jesus is always a good idea.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
