Yesterday my morning class began for the school year. My students are moms who want to learn English to help their children. For our first day, I talked with them about what the program Family Literacy is about and also about being a student. One contrast I like to use is the difference between ability and opportunity. Many of the moms did not have the opportunity to go to school when they were children or had limited opportunity only going up to 3rd grade or 6th grade. I explained that not having the opportunity before does not mean they do not have ability to learn.

Sometimes doors of opportunity are closed to us not by our choosing. It is such a blessing to watch as the moms discover they have abilities they did not realize they had before whether it be writing for the first time or realizing they can learn English.
It makes me think about how Jesus is with us. There are countless stories of Jesus taking people everyone else would overlook and close doors of opportunity to and yet Jesus takes the person and transforms them and their lives to something incredible.
Think of it. He took fishermen, blue collar workers of that day, and turned them into men who would start the church. He took a shepherd boy David and made him a king. He took a foreign women and made her the grandmother of King David. He took an outcast woman Mary Magdalene, changed her life, and bestowed the honor on her of being the first to see Jesus after his resurrection.
Jesus continues to empower people to go far beyond their circumstances today. He took me the son of an alcoholic father and mentally ill mother, me the guy who others often overlooked, and took me and transformed me and my life to be a man who has traveled to many countries serving him. He has opened opportunities for me that no one would have thought possible 30 years ago.
I love the saying that God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
Dear reader please do not look only at your circumstances to decide if something is possible. Look to Jesus. He has all power. He can do far beyond what you can imagine.
One evening many years ago, I heard Bill Bright the founder of Campus Crusade speak. He said one thing that rang loudly in my spirit and it was all I heard that night. He said, “When it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ, you can never dream too big for God because God’s ability to anoint is far greater than your ability to dream.”
Jesus has created opportunities for people since before the beginning of time. There is nothing beyond his ability. Let’s look to him and not to ourselves.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
