Anyone who has battled a serious illness can relate to what Avril Lavigne went through. She suffered with Lyme Disease. She shared about her experience in an interview:

“I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom lay with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

I tend to be skeptical of celebrities claiming an experience with God. I remember when Bob Dylan claimed to have become a Christian even making a ‘Christian Album’ only to claim to have converted to being a Jew a few years later.

But suffering and crying out to God is a different scenario. Beautiful artistic expressions have been born out of suffering. The Psalms are wonderful examples of that.

I found the song Head Above Water to be encouraging, so I wanted to share it today. The simple pray Lavigne prayed asking God to help her keep her head above the water while she was lying in bed being quite ill is beautiful in its simplicity. A young woman crying out to our heavenly father.
