When his followers asked Jesus to teach them to pray, Jesus shared a simple yet most profound truth before he shared an example of how to pray that we call the Lord’s Prayer.
Jesus told them not to just keep babbling thinking they will be heard. The reason Jesus gave to not to just babble empty words is:
“Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
When we pray, we are praying to our Father in heaven. That means we are praying out of relationship with the person we are praying to. Good fathers know what their children need. A good father plans ahead for his children.

When a child signs up for a soccer league, the child will need to pay money for a team t-shirt, might need to buy new shoes, and will need a ride to the games. A good father already knows his child will need these things but might let the child ask first. By letting the child ask first, the father can teach his child about planning, preparing, and more importantly it helps the child to grow in relationship with the father. Doing things together builds trust.
God knows before we ask.
We have a doctor’s appointment we are worried about. God already knows.
We have a job interview. God already knows.
We are having family problems. God already knows.
We lost our job. God already knows.
We failed and sinned, so we want to start new again. God already knows.
We have to fly somewhere, but have anxiety. God already knows.
The list can go on and on. Just fill in the blank of, Father I ___________________. God already knows.
But by praying to our father, trust grows on our part, he lets us be involved in the process, and we learn about God in the process.
Dear reader God knows before we ask. He is never surprised. God already knows.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
