I have to admit it. I was curious, so I watched the first episode of a new show that is based on the premise of God sending a friend request on social media to a young man who is an ardent atheist. The show was just kind of okay. I may or may not watch it again, but the premise got me thinking.

In the show the main characters gets friend suggestions from God and things happen along the way that result in the person being helped.

So perhaps without realizing it, the writers stumbled onto to something. God is always at work, has all power and is sovereign of all things. What we call coincidence is often God at work behind the scenes.

There are so many stories from my own life that are great examples of how God is always at work to connect the dots for us like the time during my first trip to Romania every time I got on the bus to get to my host home there was someone from the Romanian church or the class I taught that could help me get off at the right stop.

In contrast to some mysterious God working through friend requests, God want us to know him and have relationship with him. Yes, God wants friendship with us. Jesus said in John 15:

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you”

If we live a life of showing God’s love, the love we received from God through Jesus, then Jesus calls us friend. He calls us friend and shares things with us. He brings us into his circle of friends and confides in us what God is like, what God’s will is, and he becomes the friend that is closer to us than a brother.

Think of the lengths Jesus was willing to go through to become our friend. He died for us. He gave his life for us because he loves us. He did so knowing how broken and needy we are.

So yes God wants friendship with us. The question is do we want friendship with God?

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

Wonderful post! I heard about that show. You are right, the premise of the show is something to deeply consider. I do not believe there are any coincidences. When God lines things up “just so” I thank Him that I had the eyes to see His hand moving this one time, though as you say, He is always alive and moving. And yes, He calls us friend! What a gift of love!
