My life and ministry is all about meeting and helping people from other countries many of them refugees. They have suffered hardships that us Americans can’t imagine. I wish I could have a magic wand to make it all disappear for them, but I don’t and life doesn’t work that way. But I can pray for them and ask Jesus to help them and show himself to them. I also try to let Jesus guide me in making intentional acts, not random acts, of kindness.

By being led to make intentional acts of kindness, it helps to provide healing moments in their lives. Intentional acts of kindness are wonderful ways of showing the love of Jesus. They don’t require a lot on my part, but can have a lot of meaning for my refugee friends.
A young woman from Iran is in a chemistry class in the classroom next to mine on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. She is Mandean and came here with her family hoping for a better life free from the oppression in Iran. In Iran she could not have studied for a career in healthcare because she was not part of the majority religion there. Her mother was my student last quarter in my ESL class and is in a different ESL class on Tuesday and Thursday evening.
Last week when her mother came to the college, I asked her to come with me. We walked over to outside her daughter’s classroom, so I could show her her daughter in class. Her daughter didn’t see us. Her mother smiled as I told her, “Your daughter can have a good future here.”
That took all of about one minute, but it was a minute that meant a lot to the mother. She had lived under oppression all of her life and has only lived here in freedom for about four years. Along with her husband and three children she left the only place she knew to come to America in hopes that her children could have a bright future. That evening last week was a brief healing moment in her life.
My prayer is for the Lord to guide me into more intentional acts of kindness.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
