Sunday afternoon I went to a celebration for a friend/colleague of mine. She is a teacher at the school where my morning class is. It was a celebration of her adoption of three children being finalized. She took in three foster siblings whose birth parents were drug addicts and neglectful. My friend has a lot of love to give and the children are much better off now and are well cared for.

Being at the celebration caused me to reflect on a wonderful truth in the bible. When we come to Jesus, God adopts us as his children. We find in Romans 8:

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

I think about the similarities between what my friend did and what God does for us.

She adopted three children who had no hope for a future before they came to her. God adopts us who had no hope for an eternal future before knowing Jesus.

She bought a house so she can take care of them. God created heaven for us to be with him.

She loves her three children unconditionally even though when they first came to her, they were coming from a messed up home life. God loves us unconditionally even though we are messed up and sin.

She teaches them, guides them, and nurtures them. God teaches us, guides us, and nurtures us.

The parallels could go on and on.

God loves us so much that he sent his best, his one and only son Jesus, to provide the way for us to be adopted by God through Jesus’s death and resurrection. God loves us passionately and wants us to be his children.
