Yesterday afternoon I watched Les Miserables again. There are some poignant scenes I love in the movie and some of the theme threads of grace and mercy I appreciate. The scene that gets me the most is when Jean Valjean meets Cosette in the woods. Cosette was a young girl being mistreated by the people who were supposed to be caring for her. They sent her out into the woods by herself on a cold night to get a bucket of water. That is when Jean Valjean finds her.
He goes to confront the couple who mistreated Cosette and take Cosette as his own daughter to follow through on a promise he made to Cosette’s mother while she was dying. The look of distaste and anger in his eyes towards the couple are obvious. He takes Cosette with him. She asks if he will be a papa to her and he tells her yes.
Every time I see that scene I think about God the Father adopting us as his own. He finds us in our dire circumstances. The price for our freedom has been paid by Jesus on the cross. God the Father takes us as his own. He also has distaste and anger towards the dark forces that would ensnare us.
Our Heavenly Father finds us. He takes us in as his own. He brings healing for our souls. He becomes our protector and provider. In Romans 8 we read:
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Jesus taught us that when we pray, we pray to our Heavenly Father. The example of prayer he gave begins with Our Father in Heaven as we see in Matthew 6:
“This, then, is how you should pray:
‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,”
I love this song by Hillsong because it reminds me that is Our Father. May it bless you and help you remember today that God is our Heavenly Father.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
