On a Monday that the city is still digging out from our biggest snow this winter, and in the morning I stood outside in below zero weather waiting for a bus that was 20 minutes late, and an afternoon that physical therapy was rough, I thought the best I could do was to end the day by going to sleep. Then it happened. I checked my email with the college and saw a message that made the whole dismal day fade away.

Three years ago a shy young woman from Mexico came into my morning class. She was so shy that she always had to sit next to an older woman from Mexico during the first year. The older woman, only in her 30s but older than the shy 24 year old, was like a big sister. The shy young woman began to gain confidence during her first year in class.

I thought she would pass both the oral skills test and the reading test in her second year but she surprised me one morning in late September 2017 by letting me know she was pregnant. It was rough for her at times as she came to class dealing with morning sickness. She did learn more but not as fast as I anticipated.

She came back to class this year and she quickly hit her stride again with learning. She passed the oral skills test a few weeks ago. She took the reading test last week. What was in the email that made my dismal day fade away?

She passed the reading test on the first try. That is a huge accomplishment. I have had hundreds of mothers in my classes over the past ten years. Only three have passed the reading test on the first try including my young friend.

There are many reasons I am proud of her. She is an excellent student. She is a devoted mother and wife. She is so helpful with the other moms when we use the computers. Most of all, she loves Jesus and lives for him and is dedicated to her Hispanic church.

When I read the email, it was one of those moments that reminds me of why I do what God has called me to do. I love to empower others to reach higher in life.

I will tell her this week. I am sure she will cry a little and perhaps turn a little red when I brag about her. It is one of those golden moments in life.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
