In my work teaching English for refugees and immigrants and also in my ministry of showing the love of Jesus to refugees and immigrants, I meet people all of the time who lack education from their home country.

They begin English classes thinking they are not intelligent because they did not have a chance to receive an education in their native country. The reasons vary. For some it is because they are a part of an oppressed minority group. For some it is economic and they had to work or their parents could not afford to pay for school. Yes, sadly in some countries parents have to pay for elementary or high school.

The student begins to study English and even though at first they have no confidence because they did not have the opportunity before, they begin to gain confidence as they succeed in class. Last night in the first class of the quarter, I talked about how some of them will discover they have ability they did not know they had. I explained that not having the opportunity before does not mean they do not have ability

As I ponder this, I think about Jesus with us. When Jesus looks at us, he does not see what we were before we came to him. He sees what we are and more important what we will be as he empowers us. I love a saying I have heard so many times:

God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

I think about who I was before I came to know Jesus. I only cared about making money and having a good time. I still had a hidden anger about life growing up in the situation I grew up in. No one who knew at the time would have thought I would be in part-time ministry and also teaching part-time. But Jesus looked at what he could do in and through me.

Jesus empowered me, so that is why I am so passionate about empowering those who have been through ordeals in life like my refugee friends. They did not have opportunities before, so I want to help them make the most of their opportunities here in my city.

I think about how Jesus came up to fishermen like Andrew and Peter and said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

Jesus says to all of us- “Follow me and I will make you_____________________” He fills in the blank.

We do not need to worry about if we are qualified to do what Jesus calls us to do. He will qualify us.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
