This week my morning Family Literacy comes to an end for the school year. It was a wonderful year with the moms seeing them grow in their English language ability and understanding of their children’s education.

The picture is of my awesome volunteer Kathleen. She has impacted many lives this year and the previous years with her kindness, relationship building with the moms, her encouragement of the moms, and sense of humor. The moms love Kathleen days on Wednesdays , so yesterday they all wanted to take pictures with her.

We saw a lot of achievement this year with 2 moms completing the program and being eligible to move to higher level ESL classes at the college. All of the moms improved their test scores. We saw moms who spoke ZERO English begin to speak in full sentences.

Their dedication to come on cold winter mornings, come when they are tired, and do homework even though they are busy moms should inspire anyone. A few examples of their dedication:

1 mom had back surgery and returned to class three weeks later.

1 mom had a baby in January and returned to class in March.

The end of the year brings about mixed feelings for me. I look forward to having time to relax next week, but also know I will miss them over the summer.

This morning we will have a celebration morning. They will bring food for a party. Yesterday I said, “If you want me to cook food, raise your hand.” None of them raised their hands. Then I said, “If you only want me to bring plates, cups, and napkins, raise your hands,” They all raised their hands. Smart students 🙂

Tomorrow I will give them Achievement Awards and we will clean up the room for the summer. I will say goodbye to one of the two who completed the program. The other one will volunteer in the school helping the moms with computer time which means I do not have to say goodbye to her. 🙂

So the school year is a wrap for my morning class. Summer adventures await me for lives to touch with the love of Jesus.

Thank you for reading. God bless.
