My sister in Christ, Sherita, shared with me in a comment on last week’s Music Monday that she likes Danny Gokey. Sherita’s blog is plantingseedsingodsgrowinggarden.wordpress.com
I found out I have heard one of his songs on Christian radio- Tell Your Heart to Beat Again.
With lyrics like:
You’re shattered
Like you’ve never been before
The life you knew
In a thousand pieces on the floor
And words fall short in times like these
When this world drives you to your knees
You think you’re never gonna get back
To the you that used to be
and the way he sings the song, it caused me to do a google search about him because it seemed like he had been through something.
I found out that his first wife, who was his high school sweetheart, had a congenital heart defect. She had a surgery to repair her heart but ended up dying after they had only been married a little over a year.
The back story of his life brings new appreciation to the lyrics as he sings:
Tell your heart to beat again
Close your eyes and breathe it in
Let the shadows fall away
Step into the light of grace
Yesterday’s a closing door
You don’t live there anymore
Say goodbye to where you’ve been
And tell your heart to beat again
His wife died at a young age. That would be a deep valley period. The song is about moving on from past trauma.
Jesus said in John 16:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
We are not immune to suffering and the troubles in this life if we follow Jesus. We only know that he has overcome the world and that he will always be with us.
There are times that we have to move on and not live in the past. Times that we need to let go, as hard as it is, and move on to the future Jesus has for us. As Christians our faith is always a future focused faith. The past is only there to learn from, to share about, and to remember times God came through, but we don’t live there. We live in the now with a focus on our eternal future with Jesus.
I hope and pray this song blesses you like it has me. Thank you for reading. God Bless.
