Saturday morning it was a great blessing to take my Ukrainian friends to our local zoo here in Lincoln. The zoo here is designed for children. Thanks to friends from church donating, I was able to bring twenty friends with me, parents and children.
It was a great blessing to see the children smiling and laughing. They all came to my city less than a year ago. They all experienced the trauma of war. They all lost their homes and had to come to a new place in a different country. For the children the biggest thrills were riding the train around the zoo, sliding down the elephant slide, and feeding the giraffes.
There was even a special zoo attraction that my friend Alexey and I found. 🙂
Yes we found the coffee shop in the zoo. We sat down and had coffee for about thirty minutes, which gave us time to talk about an idea I will share more about tomorrow. Is it surprising we found a coffee shop in the zoo? 🙂
It was difficult to get them to agree on a day until I pulled the it is my birthday trump card. I told them their birthday gift to me would be seeing their children happy and then I insisted on this past Saturday since my birthday was last Thursday. They were all glad we went.
Seeing the children have a wonderful morning was definitely the best birthday gift I could have experienced this year especially knowing the trauma they have been through. It made me think of what Jesus said about children in Mark 10:13-14
People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Thanks to my friends at church, Jesus blessed the children through us. 🙂
