It was surprising for me yesterday evening when I discovered that none of my students agreed with my example sentence I shared in class. I was teaching about uses of Past Participles focusing on using them as adjectives. So I used the word proven. My example sentence?
“It is a proven fact that shopping is not good.”

I knew it would elicit laughter and reaction. I knew most of the women in my class would disagree, but to my surprise all of the men disagreed too. 🙂
I tried to convince them of my view by saying shopping is dangerous for my wallet but to no avail.
Humor is something I try to include in my teaching because if my students smile and laugh, it reduces stress in trying to learn English. It also makes me more approachable in their minds. Another thing I will say often when they ask a question is, “good question thank you for asking.” By saying that it encourages them to ask questions and again makes me approachable in their minds.
Jesus wants us to know he is approachable. Hebrews 4:14 to 16 says:
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
We can approach Jesus because he is our Sympathetic High Priest. He lived this life and experienced the hardships of this life. That is a main point in my book Jesus Understands Trauma.

We can come to Jesus in prayer seeking help knowing he empathizes with us. What a wonderful truth. 🙂
By the way, out of curiosity, do you agree with my example sentence?
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
