I love going to church and worshipping Jesus. I love seeing my friends and teaching my conversational English class on Sunday mornings.

Each Sunday in my class, we end with me reading from the bible in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Then I usually play a worship song with laptop connected via usb port to the TV in the room. The last thing is prayer time. Each week I pray in Portuguese and Spanish as well as English. I always ask my friends from Brazil and Spanish speaking countries if my Portuguese and Spanish are okay. They always say yes, but perhaps they are being nice. 🙂

This leads to my problem each Sunday. Having three languages floating around in my brain and having just used all three sometimes causes a little problem. My American friends talk with me and it sometimes I am slow to speak because I am trying to come back to English only. It is not always easy to transition between languages.

A language none of us needs to worry about speaking or understanding is God’s language. He knows all languages. Even better for us, when we pray, we do not need to worry about the right words, saying everything perfectly, or at times being able to say anything at all. Romans 8:26-27 says:

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

The Holy Spirit is basically our translator as we pray Even if all we can do is ask for help and say ugh help me. God is not impressed by flowery language. He looks at our heart attitude.

I might be a bit crazy but have also been thinking about learning some Ukrainian since I interact with Ukrainians so much. lol

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. If I lived in Nebraska and then you could teach me Spanish. I am trying to learn via the duolingo app. I have a long way to go. I have heard about some Spanish-American families speaking “Spanglish,” where they talk in a minute of the two languages. I work with some people who speak multiple languages fluently. Their brains amaze me. Sometimes I have to think about what is being said in English, my only language. And yet those folks can keep up faster than me. Lol.

    1. Have you tried Babbel? That’s another App that is supposed to help teach Languages fast.

      1. No. I have heard of it, but haven’t looked into yet. I will check it out. Thank you!

    2. I am learning Spanish with Duolingo, too! Blessings, Bridget!

    3. Rosetta Stone is another program you could use. Maybe we could practice in Zoom

  2. Beautiful analogy of the Holy Spirit being our transelator. You are very good with language and I think you should learn some Ukraine

    1. I will try learning some 🙂

  3. Blessings Matt as this testament speaks to the truth found in God’s universal language. You amaze me with your ability to converse in other languages.
