Each Sunday afternoon, as I interact with the children at the new Ukrainian church, I joke with them about homework. It goes something like this.
Me- I am worried you don’t have enough homework. I can give you some because I am a teacher.
Children- shake their heads no.

They know it is only a joke, but much to my surprise this past Sunday, a ten year old girl came up to me after the worship service and asked me for homework. So I asked her to write some sentences about herself and draw a picture for me. She smiled, so I think she might actually do it.
One thing I make sure to do as I interact with them is to remind them that Jesus loves them. These are children who came from a war torn country and have survived that trauma. Children are resilient, but still there are effects. So as they come up to me to greet me, it is important to bless them and to remind them of Jesus’s love for them.
One of the things I liked about the series The Chosen is that the first episode begins with Jesus interacting with children while carving wood. The children return to find that Jesus left some toys carved out of wood for them. Though it is a fictional account, it portrayed how Jesus cares for children. In Mark 10 we read about Jesus’s response when his disciples tried to keep children away.
When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
I am thankful for those who donated for me to give families Walmart gift cards. My thinking is it is better to empower the parents to give to their children at Christmas than to give gifts to the children. If you would like to contribute, let me know. You can also consider helping children in your area whose families are struggling.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
P.S.- if she draws a picture, I will share it next week. 🙂
