New Year’s is perhaps the holiday that I am most cynical about. The bills I owe today will still be there January 2nd. The problems I have will still be there January 2nd. Nothing magically changes just because the calendar has flipped to another year. However, it serves one purpose for me, which is to reflect on what God has done in my life.

The reason my previous two posts, In The Rearview Mirror- 2023 Writing, and In The Rearview Mirror 2023-Ministry, started with in the rearview mirror is because the title reflects my thought. Oh I just noticed the play on words-reflect and rearview mirror. 🙂

A rearview mirror gives us a view of what is behind us but that is not our focus while driving. If we look in the rearview mirror the whole time we are driving an accident will happen. The rearview mirror is meant to be glimpsed at briefly while keeping our focus on what is in front of us within our field of vision.

We are meant to live in the present, learn from the past, but not live in the past. We are meant to live in the present trusting the future to Jesus. Jesus taught us to not worry about tomorrow and focus on him in Matthew 6:33-34.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

I am thankful for what God has done for me this past year, but I do not live in the past. My hope for the coming year is to press on as Paul wrote in Philippians 3:

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

So even with all of that said, I do wish you all manifold blessings from God in the coming year. 🙂

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. Thank you, Matt! May this year bring you into the fullness of the destiny God has written in his books for you! See Psalm 139.

  2. Great message big brother. I appreciate your blogs and look forward to catching up. Lord willing, in eight weeks I will be a retiree with much time to read purchased books and blogs.

    1. A retiree already? I thought you would be too young 🙂

  3. We are meant to live in the present and learn from the past. I like your rear view mirror reflections, brother. Perhaps our thoughts about New Year’s resolutions should be more about briefly looking back and adjusting our focus, rather than over—focusing on the future. As you said, 2024 will arrive one day at a time, just like 2023 did.
