In June 1997, I had my first missions trip to another country-Romania. My purpose for being on the team was to share about Jesus on the streets and in the parks, but one afternoon early our time there something happened. I was playing basketball with some boys outside the school where we held our English classes when suddenly I felt a pop on the bottom of my foot. I had torn something. I could barely walk.

We could not buy crutches in any store. We would have had to hire someone to make some but by the time I would have them, I would probably not have needed them. So a makeshift broom handle was what I depended on for four days.

During those four days, I hung out at the school talking with people and helped with the English classes. It was my first experience teaching English. I loved the experience so much that I went again in June 1998 to teach my own class not just help. It was through my trips to Romania that Jesus called me to do what I do now.

Even though that feels like a lifetime ago, I will never forget how I got my start teaching English. God put the pieces together for me step by step and now it has been twenty four years of teaching English and helping refugees and immigrants in my city sharing the love of Jesus along the way.

Jesus has blessed me to share him with people from all over the world over the years and it all started with an injury that at the time seemed so ill timed.

Dear reader the truth of Romans 8:28 has been evident in my life so many times.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. It seems the best learned lessons come from “ill timed” tribulation—THROUGH the pain we endure in the process. I’ve been thanking God for the blessings that come from the trials. Perseverance brings character and hope. Hope makes us not ashamed. You have been blessed, Big Brother, with the gift of teaching. 🤗

      How are you?

  7. I am just starting my teaching career. So it’s very encouraging to read that God works everything for the good of those who love him.

There’s a down side to spending a lot of time with infants and toddlers. I catch a lot of bugs. Currently I’m fighting a cold and the dreaded pink eye. I soldiered on and was back to work after 1 sick day, but on Friday I was glad it was Friday because for so many reasons I felt done with the day. I needed a weekend to shift gears and some self care. As sort of a stand in mom you really need those self care days. It’s not an easy job. BUT it does come with some blessings. Little ones smiles, hugs and watching their excitement and wonder for life as they experience things that we take for granted.

Thank for sharing your “beginnings” story. 28 years later is the proof that God has seen you safe and blessed thus far. ❤️

Have a nice Sunday, dad. Love you. ❤️

    1. Love you too sweet daughter. I am glad you can be with little ones even through the challenges 🙂

  8. oops… 24 years. 😆 I’m rushing God.
