In one of my morning classes, I have a young man from Afghanistan. He lives with his parents and works at a Kawasaki plant here. The class is Monday/Wednesday morning. This past week he was absent on Monday. Wednesday morning he came to class and I told him we missed him on Monday. He was honest and told me he was sleeping.

I joked saying he is young and he agreed, Then I pointed out that a woman from Bangladesh in my class is young too but she came to class. He said, “but she is married” as if that explains it. She laughed and rolled her eyes as I asked if that made a difference.
I enjoy such light hearted moments in class and seeing my students smile and laugh. I know their lives are not easy and learning English is not easy as well. So if we have a light hearted moment and I smile and laugh with them, it can help reduce stress.
One of the reasons I like the series The Chosen is because it portrays Jesus as someone who interacted with people on many levels including light hearted moments.
Hebrews 4:14-15 tells us Jesus is our Sympathetic High Priest.
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
That tells me Jesus is approachable. We can come to Jesus and not worry he will toss us out.
In the bible we can read about many occasions when Jesus visited people the religious leaders would not. As Jesus said it, he came to seek the lost. There are times that it is appropriate to express our sadness with tears as we pray. There are times we need to pour out our souls to Jesus. We can cast our cares on him because he cares about us. But there are also times to enjoy life, laugh, and enjoy the presence of Jesus in our midst.
By the way, according to my student, if you are married, you do not need sleep. 🙂
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
