In one of my morning classes, I have a young man from Afghanistan. He lives with his parents and works at a Kawasaki plant here. The class is Monday/Wednesday morning. This past week he was absent on Monday. Wednesday morning he came to class and I told him we missed him on Monday. He was honest and told me he was sleeping.

I joked saying he is young and he agreed, Then I pointed out that a woman from Bangladesh in my class is young too but she came to class. He said, “but she is married” as if that explains it. She laughed and rolled her eyes as I asked if that made a difference.

I enjoy such light hearted moments in class and seeing my students smile and laugh. I know their lives are not easy and learning English is not easy as well. So if we have a light hearted moment and I smile and laugh with them, it can help reduce stress.

One of the reasons I like the series The Chosen is because it portrays Jesus as someone who interacted with people on many levels including light hearted moments.

Hebrews 4:14-15 tells us Jesus is our Sympathetic High Priest.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

That tells me Jesus is approachable. We can come to Jesus and not worry he will toss us out.

In the bible we can read about many occasions when Jesus visited people the religious leaders would not. As Jesus said it, he came to seek the lost. There are times that it is appropriate to express our sadness with tears as we pray. There are times we need to pour out our souls to Jesus. We can cast our cares on him because he cares about us. But there are also times to enjoy life, laugh, and enjoy the presence of Jesus in our midst.

By the way, according to my student, if you are married, you do not need sleep. 🙂

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. Lovely, Matt!!
Jesus was a real breathing, walking, talking, hurting, laughing, eating and sleeping individual just like us. Although there is that one occasion, where it was important for the Holy Spirit to reveal to us that Jesus needed to sleep, as well…But He [Himself] was in the stern [of the boat], asleep on the [leather] cushion; and they awoke Him and said to Him, Master, do You not care that we are perishing (Mk 4:38)
Otherwise, we find Jesus awake, active and alert- And He was single too😂

    1. 🙂 🙂 🙂 Yes Jesus was single and took naps. I take naps and love them

  2. Lol your student is funny! I am glad you can have such light hearted moments during teaching, it is important!

  3. Jesus is compassionate, caring, and approachable; we can reach out to him anytime in prayer. My favorite painting of Jesus is one where he is smiling. 🌺

    1. Jesus smiling is a wonderful image

  4. Matt, this put a smile on my face (and in my heart and soul). For reasons like yours, I love The Chosen. The interactions between you and your students are wonderful! I love it!! Thank you for all you do for them. I always picture Jesus laughing! He felt every emotion we do–as a HUMAN and our Lord–Praise God!

I pray for you daily, brother. Many blessings and hugs! I hope you’re finding more strength daily!

    1. Thank you for praying little sister. You are in my prayers too. Jesus smiling at us is an image the encourages me.

      1. It’s my blessing to pray, brother. And I appreciate your prayers, too! For so many reasons, he has to be laughing at me. Sometimes laughter releases the emotions even better than tears! God bless you, brother!
