Wednesday evenings are a time that I teach an online class in Zoom. The class starts at 6:30. A funny thing happened an hour before my class was supposed to start. My electricity went out.

It wasn’t just me. 30,000 people in my city were without power for various lengths of time. No electricity meant no internet. and no way to charge the battery for my laptop. When and why did it go out you ask? Good question.

Around 5pm, we had a powerful thunderstorm blow through our city. the storm was powerful enough to knock down trees and tree branches. My lights flickered a few times and then they went out. I waited to see if they would come back on but they didn’t. So I called my students to let them know no class last night.

The electricity being out presented me with another problem. The only food I had in my place required cooking- popcorn setting in the microwave of course. I did not have food that would not require cooking. So I called my friend Luis and after the storm had cleared out, he came to take me to a store.

Weaving around fallen trees and fallen tree branches, we made our ay to two different stores and then the third one was open. The first two had to close due to no power.

My task completed with the purchase of food that did not need cooking, we returned to my place weaving around the obstacle course of fallen trees and branches.

The kicker is that as we approached my apartment building, we noticed the lights were on. Our endeavor to find a store that was open was in the end, not necessary.

As fast and powerful as the storm came, it reminded me of the time Jesus was in the boat with the disciples and a storm came upon them in Matthew 8.

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

What an event that would have been to witness as Jesus showed his power in stopping the storm.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
