Yesterday evening after my class, my friend Luis from El Salvador gave me a ride home. I got in his car and realized he was talking with his father in El Salvador, so I asked him to hand me the phone and I greeted his father in Spanish. We spoke in Spanish on the phone for a few minutes. His father thanked me more than once for helping Luis.

A son talking with his father in another country thousands of miles away caused me to reflect on prayer. When Jesus taught his disciples about prayer, he told them when they pray they are praying to their father in heaven. In Matthew 6:8 he said:

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

When we pray, we are praying to Our Father in heaven who knows us intimately. He knows what we need before we ask. When we pray, we are not sharing anything God does not already know. He knows what we need. He does not need us to pray, but we need prayer. Prayer helps us in our relationship with God.

God is not thousands of miles away like Luis’s father is. God is with us all of the time. He is with us everywhere we go.

What an awesome privilege that we can pray to Our Father in heaven.

By the way, I told Luis’s father that Luis loves to have a lot of homework. Luis just smiled and shook his head.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
