It is interesting for me to see the balance in God’s Word on so many things. One of those issues is about miracles and the effects they have. I have often thought about this because of some experiences that have happened.

One afternoon some years ago, a Muslim woman from Sudan was catatonic in the hospital after a health crisis. I felt led to go see her and bring her a card. I walked into the hospital room to give her the card saying to her, “I have been praying to Jesus for you.” She came out of her catatonic state smiled and said thank you. One would think that would have led to many coming to believe in Jesus, but it did not.

John wrote in John 20:30-31

“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

He recorded the miracles so people would believe in Jesus but note the word- May. One would think if people observed a miracle they would come to faith. Reading about Jesus and his miracles should cause people to come to faith in Jesus.

Jesus spoke about signs to the Pharisees, the religious leaders. They would constantly ask for proof by asking what sign Jesus would perform to prove himself to them. By Jesus replying in Matthew 16:40 to the Pharisees asking for sign:

“He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. “

Jesus spoke to the hardness of their hearts. Signs and miracles can bring about faith but they can also futher harden the hearts of people.

Interesting to me is that it is quite likely that Saul, who became Paul, well might have been among them when they asked for a sign. Jesus spoke of the only sign being of Jonah which Jonah being in the belly of the whale for three days referring to the eventual death and resurrection of Jesus.

It was Saul, who became Paul. after the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus appeared to Saul blinding him on the Damascus road causing Saul to come to faith and eventually becoming the apostle who took the gospel to the world.

What do we make of all of this? We share about Jesus, we pray, we show his love, but we cannot expect anything other than we have been faithful because when we share the message about Jesus, share his love, and pray for others, they may come to faith or they may let their hearts be hardened. The results are not up to us only being faithful is.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. Her coming out of that catatonic state really was a miracle! Prayer works!
