Christmas through the eyes of a child is something I vaguely remember in my own life with my childhood being in the far distant past. But still remember loving the Christmas shows on TV, and being excited on Christmas morning opening gifts.

Now I observe it in the children at New Breath church as they practice to sing songs and as they talk about Christmas. That childlike wonder and excitement is a blessing to see.

Hearing the real Christmas story, baby Jesus born of a virgin, miracle birth from God, wisemen, shepherds, so many times over the years, could cause one to take it for granted or to just go through the motions.

But to step back and take it all in again, to see it all with childlike wonder, to trust in Jesus, to wonder at the reality that Jesus willingly left his throne in heaven to be born as a human baby to become our Savior, is part of what I think Jesus was getting at in Matthew 18 when he used a child as an example of faith

“He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”

To the supposed wise in the world, we who believe in Jesus, look foolish for believing in what they perceive as a fairy tale. Yet as Paul wrote, God chose the foolish to shame the wise.

So as I go to New Breath today, I will watch the children a little, interact with them, and take in their joy realizing I can learn from them.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. It’s definitely interesting how our perspective changes as we get older. Life somehow dulls our innocence and sense of anticipation. Good post. 🙏

  2. God has taught me much through the influence of children. As Charles Dickens said, “These little ones are so fresh from God.”

Beautiful reminder. Children see the wonder and miracle of Jesus’ birth with pure faith. May we all learn to trust and believe like them.

  4. Beautiful Matt, I remember when after my oldest daughter was born and in her stroller she would giggle at the sound of the birds as well as to love to watch the trees move with the wind and I began to see things in a different way through the eyes of my child
