Sunday morning I had a brief conversation with a friend at church. He is in his 80s, so he has seen his share of ups and downs in life. He asked me how I was doing and I answered, “hanging in there,” he replied, “Sometimes we just have to hang in there until the day comes when things get better, but we don’t know when that day will come.”

Following Jesus doesn’t mean that life will be smooth sailing as soon as we come to faith in Jesus. We are not immune to the struggles and valleys in this life. We are also not immune to failure in this life. There can be times we feel like giving up, but in those times we can take comfort in knowing that God will never give up on us just as he promised in Philppians 1.

“he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God adopts us as his children and never gives up. He is always at work in our lives to help us grow and overcome.

There was a beautiful article recently in the local newspaper in my hometown about a 9 year old girl who was struggling in school due to family problems. Her aunt and uncle took her in, adopted her, went to counseling with her, and guided her. That little girl is now a confident teenage girl who is in the marching band in high school, plays basketball, and doing well in school. She is also part of the youth group at church. The once struggling little 9 year old is now a thriving teen.

This true story is a wonderful example of how God works in our lives. He patiently works in our lives step by step. He doesn’t give up on us. Everywhere we go, everything we do, he is with us. He knows us and how to reach us. If we stumble, he is there to help us get back up like a patient father teaching his child how to ride a bike.

So in those moments that we feel like giving up that all of us who follow Jesus have, remember he is with us in the valley, he is patiently working in our lives, and he will never give up on us.
