Our lives get hectic. There are kids to take care of. There are work duties that need to be taken care of. In my life there are classes to teach, papers and tests to grade, lessons to plan, and ministry to tend to. We can get so focused on things we need to do that we might neglect our relationships with those in our lives. It is so important to take time to nurture those relationships whether they are family or friendships.

Martha and Mary were sisters who knew Jesus during his earthly ministry. Jesus came to visit one day. Martha was busy taking care of things in the house, but Mary sat at the feet of Jesus soaking in his teaching. Martha was busy with things, but Mary was simply being with Jesus. Martha complained to Jesus that Mary wasn’t doing her part. She thought Mary was being lazy. Jesus replied:

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

One thing is needed. What is that one thing? Being with Jesus. Being in his presence. He is the vine and we are the branches.

There is a balance in scripture. Of course we need to tend to our lives. But when Jesus comes calling, we need to be in his presence. We need him. He doesn’t need us. We need him to be refreshed daily, sometimes hourly.

A famous verse in the bible is Revelation 3:20 when Jesus says:

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

That is commonly used to share faith with those who do not know Jesus, but it was written to a lukewarm church. The church of Laodicia had become lukewarm, They had lost their passion for Jesus. They had lost the desire to be in his presence. Jesus offered to come in and dine with them. In other words, he offered to come into their lives and be with them. Jesus comes knocking each day. He offers to spend time with us. The question is do we respond. Do we open the door for him and invite him in? Do we sit at his feet like Mary or do we let busyness get in the way?

If we sit at his feet, there are so many blessings. We can be refreshed. Understanding and guidance can be received. Answers can come. I love a line in the song So Will I. It is:

“And as you speak, a hundred billion failures disappear”

Dear readers please take time to be with Jesus and sit at his feet like Mary. Perhaps take time to listen to the song So Will I.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
