In my work with refugees and immigrants, I often have someone translating for us. I interact with so many different language groups that a translator is necessary for understanding what is being shared. The translator is a bridge between people who do not speak the same language.

Did you know all of us who follow Jesus have a translator working for us all of the time?

Have you ever felt it was hard to put into words what to say when you pray?

I know I have felt that many times. Sometimes the burden is so great that I don’t know how to put it into words.

It is encouraging for me to know and to remember that I do not need to worry about having the right words to pray. I do not need some ‘approved’ prayer to pray. I do not need to sound like some eloquent speaker to talk with God.

When we pray, The Holy Spirit helps us by being the bridge between us and God somewhat like the translators help me communicate with people from other language groups, but even deeper than that. The Holy Spirit searches our hearts as we pray to intercede for us. Romans 8 says:

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

This means that even if my prayer is a ‘ugh’ while trying to express what is on my heart, God understands me. When deep calls to deep as King David wrote in Psalm 42, The holy Spirit searches our hearts.

It is so comforting to know that I do not need to sound perfect for God to hear me and understand me. Understanding this frees me up in my prayer time.
