With today being the first day of fall in the U.S., yesterday in my morning class we talked about fall. For some of my students it is their first time to experience fall in a northern country. I have students from Burma and Guatemala who have never seen leaves change color like they will here in a few weeks.

Part of my role for my students is to help them understand life in America which includes things like understanding changes in seasons. One thing I start to do is look at their feet this time of year to see if they are wearing sandals or shoes because if I see them wearing sandals it leads to one question, “Do you have shoes?” I ask them that in private to make sure they are ready for the colder weather that will come soon.

For my students, I am a bridge for them for understanding their new country and a guide for preparing for life here.

As a Christian I try to remember that for people I meet I can also be a bridge for them for knowing about Jesus.

I love the saying that there are five gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and you. Many people have never read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John but they know us. We can show people Jesus by how we treat them, how we live our lives, and by sharing Jesus with them.

I try to remember what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

If we profess to be a Christian, then we are an ambassador, a representative of Christ to a suffering world in desperate need of our Savior. Being an ambassador of Christ is not an option if we are Christians. It comes automatically with being a Christian and Jesus expects us to represent him to a suffering world. The only choice is whether we choose to fulfill our privileged role of ambassador with how we live our lives, by praying for those who don’t know Jesus, and by sharing Jesus with others.
