It is an experience that should not have surprised me. It was a blessing, but one that caused me to pause and think. Someone I mentored six years ago and helped get started teaching and helping refugees and immigrants turned around and made me rethink a decision I had made. In other words, one who I had mentored turned around and mentored me a little using my own life to prod me.

Kelly volunteered in my morning class during her senior year at the university and then was my assistant six years ago. She has become a blessing to many refugee families in my city, Her students in her morning class love her. We have continued our friendship which has included visiting her and her husband.
This past week after I was not able to connect with the Rheumatologist who I saw two years ago and was frustrated that my appointment Monday yet again did not provide answers, I commented to Kelly on facebook that I was thinking, “I am 60 years old, They can’t figure it out, so at this point I think why bother.”
Her response was along the line of everyone deserves healthcare and “You need to pursue the options out of respect for yourself and the life you’ve been given…in the same mindset you would encourage a struggling student or friend.”
The student became the teacher so to speak.
Someone I had mentored got my attention.
I thought about it. I still could not connect for whatever reason with the specialist I saw two years ago, so I called another one. I have an appointment for March 14th. I don’t know if anything will come of it or not, but I will go.
It is quite the experience. The tables were turned.
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
