In the midst of our biggest snow of the winter, it was a blessing to be able to join a family that is special to me to celebrate the birthdays of two of their daughters yesterday.

The view from my balcony

This is a family from Iraq that my friend Kelly introduced me to in December 2017 when I used my church pick up to help them move. They have been through so many hardships but their home is full of love.

Kelly and her husband Ty picked me up on our snowy day which was a blizzard here. I had gone to a store in the morning to get the girls coloring books because they love to color, but wasn’t sure about driving with my car having problems.

The mother/wife is a wonderful cook. When she cooks, it is a work of art. Her hospitality impresses me considering how little this family has. She is so thoughtful too. She knows about my dietary restrictions with Celiacs, so she made a special plate for me all gluten free.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit the home of someone from the Middle East, plan on eating a lot. 🙂 Even if you eat a lot, the mother will say you need to eat more.

After eating a lot, came the sweets. We sang Happy Birthday. The little girls opened their gifts. One thing I try to remember is to not upstage the parents, so I bought simple gifts for the girls. Their parents may be poor, but they love their girls and do the best they can.

To see the smiles on their little girls faces made it so worthwhile to go out in the blizzard.

When I visit this family and other refugee families, I am convinced Jesus would definitely visit them and join them for a meal. He often did so when he was on earth. My friend Kelly shows this family so much love, so  she is definitely showing them God’s love.

We hope to have a big celebration for this family soon when the mother and father become citizens. The mother has already passed. The father just needs to retake the written part.

Today I will stay home. Church services are canceled. The city needs to dig out from the snow. But I do have some delicious leftovers to heat up that I was sent home with yesterday. It is my favorite recipe, warm up food my friends from other countries give me. 🙂

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
