In 2008, my birthday was on a Sunday. On Sunday mornings I teach a class at my church. In 2008, I had a young couple from Brazil, a young couple from Germany, a young couple from South Korea, a young couple of a Vietnamese wife and American Husband, a woman from Belgium, two young men from Congo, a man from Japan, a woman from Ukraine, and some young people from India who would come.

That Sunday I had a meeting at my church before my class, so I asked my friend Yoshio from Japan to pick up the two young men from Congo. He agreed, so that Sunday morning I drove to my church for the meeting. My class starts at 9am and my meeting was at 8:25.
When I got to the church, Olivier- one of the young men from Congo, came out to meet me in the parking lot smiling. He shook my hand and carried my laptop bag in for me.
Once inside, I went to my meeting and Olivier went his way. In the parking lot my first thoughts were, “Why is Olivier here at 8:20? He came with Yoshio. Yoshio never comes this early.” I realized they were up to something.
I went to my meeting and after it was finished, I went to the room for my class. The lights were off, but I knew they were up to something because of Olivier. I walked in, turned on the lights, and they all yelled, “Happy Birthday.”
I acted surprised because I did not want them to feel disappointed the surprise had been ruined. We had a nice party, They had a dual theme of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars my two favorite movie series.
It blessed me that they would do so because I had not had a birthday party since I was 11 years old. We also went to lunch at one of my favorite restaurants. It is one of the memories a teacher remembers with fondness and actually the fact that Olivier came out to meet me, thus giving it away, makes the memory even more fun.
Do you have a favorite birthday memory?
Thanks for reading. God Bless.
