It is Father’s Day in the U.S. today. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who read my blog.

When I think about how Jesus revealed God as being our father in heaven, it helps me understand how relational God is. When Jesus spoke to his followers, he constantly referred to God as- “Your father in heaven.” Such as in Matthew 6 when Jesus was teaching to not pray merely repeating recited prayers or make noise to be heard because:
“Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
God knows what we need before we ask, but he wants us to come to him because it helps us to grow in our relationship with him.
I will never forget my first trip to Constanta Romania in June 1997. I had written a gospel pamphlet in English that was translated into Romanian. I was able to get many copies made. As I would sit on the bus holding the pamphlets in my hand, people would actually come up smiling to take one. The pamphlet was God A Loving Heavenly Father. based on Romans 8:
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children”.

But some of us are born into families with no father because of abandonment, or into families with abusive fathers, alcoholic fathers like I was, emotionally unavailable fathers, or our parents were divorced so seeing father was limited.
Something that helped me years ago when I was new in my faith was to observe good fathers. I learned a lot from just watching them when they didn’t even know I was. As I grew in my relationship with God, I was able to forgive my earthly father and actually ended up leading him to Jesus. I shared about my earthly father last year in a post- Forgiveness from Me Led to My Father Receiving Forgiveness from God.
One dad whose blog I follow has an inspiring story. He is single dad, a widower, and has an autistic child. His blog is bereavedsingledad.blog. I appreciate the true stories he shares of raising and loving his autistic son, so I wanted to give him a shout out on Father’s Day and today is Father’s Day in his country too. 🙂
One important thing to remember is that God knows what you have been through. If you were blessed with a good earthly dad, that is wonderful. If you were not, God is patient and will help us to heal and grow into our father/child relationship with our heavenly father.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
