Story Time-First Time I Drank Espresso

My second trip to Romania in 1998 introduced to a new friend- Espresso 🙂

I have never been able to sleep on planes and that trip was no exception. I had maybe 4 or 5 hours of sleep over two days. We arrived at our host homes about 1am Romania time and went to sleep right away. The sunrise woke me up at 5:30, so I was very tired. I was scheduled to speak in the church that morning, so I asked our hostess if she had coffee. She said-“of course.” She had also made chocolate cake from scratch for our breakfast.

She brought me a little cup of coffee and when I looked at, I thought-“I will need about 20 of these small cups.” After drinking 6 cups of espresso, much to our hostess’s surprise, and eating two pieces of chocolate cake, I was full of energy from the caffeine and sugar high.

When I spoke at the church, the translator had to ask me to slow down because I was speaking too fast. 🙂

There have been times that I was out of energy or not feeling well and I have asked God to help me. In those times I have felt the Holy Spirit empower me.

Even the meekest prayer to ask for help will get God’s attention as we seek to serve him. Spending time in the presence of Jesus empowers me for my day, but I do have some days that I wake up fatigued from chronic illness, so my prayer time is mostly me listening to worship music while trying to mutter coherent phrases. The important thing is to spend time with Jesus. If we do, he will refresh us as promised in Isaiah 40:

“but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

By the way, I discovered a wonderful drink at a local coffee shop in my city called the Scooter Shot, It is a cup of dark roast coffee with a shot of espresso in it. If I drink it in the morning, my students ask me to speak slowly. 🙂

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. 😂😂😂 That’s the work of espresso. Small but strong! I take espresso every morning. That was a funny story. And I love what you said about us spending time with God. Even when we are weak he’ll definitely strengthen us. Keep on doing God’s work and He will be your strength at all times.

  2. Good reminder that He will give us strength!!
Did you get my question on your post you wrote about Lincoln-the city I see? (I think that was the name) I sent it a few days ago.

  3. Rule of thumb: don’t drink expresso and talk. 😂 I like the way you mentioned that the way we spend our prayer time can vary. But God hears even our meekest prayers. Thanks big brother. ❤️😊

  4. Matt, I read the title this morning and thought, “Oh this is going to be gooood.” and it was. 🙂 Great story! I know how I feel after one small espresso. I can only imagine 6 paired with the adrenaline rush of public speaking. 🙂 Thank you for your authentic, honest stories!

Yes big bro. Spending time with Him revives us and refuels our spirit man to work and holding fast!.
