Black Friday is here. Shoppers will go crazy. A lot, emphasis on A LOT, of money will be spent. People will get up way too early or even not sleep the night before just to try to get that deal. And don’t get me started on those stores that open on Thanksgiving??????

What are my plans? Help a friend and then stay home and relax. I never go shopping on Black Friday.
My students often ask me why we call it Black Friday. I explain to them that before there were computers, when people recorded things by hand, they used black ink for money coming in and red ink for money going out. That is why in business they use the phrase in the black.

Businesses want to be in the black not in the red. In the black, they made a profit. In the red, they lost money. So with Black Friday traditionally being the start of Christmas shopping, stores and manufacturers hope for a robust four weeks of shopping.
It interests me the way different colors are used in different cultures. For example, in many countries people wear black or dark colors to funerals, but in some Asian countries they wear white to funerals.
Sometimes I think shopping on Black Friday would be the death of me. 🙂
My favorite college football team colors are red and white. The chant at the stadium today will be- Go Big Red.
Where is this rambling post about colors going? God uses colors to communicate meaning to us. In Isaiah 1:18 we see:
“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”
The reason we have Christmas is to celebrate and remember God becoming a human baby when Jesus-God the Son- was born. He was born as a baby to grow to be a man so he could die for our sins. By trusting in him and his death for us, our sins that are like scarlet become white as snow in God’s eyes. That is the real meaning of Christmas.

So if you must torture yourself with shopping on this day to find that perfect gift just so your little ones can play in and be fascinated by the box the toy came in, go ahead and go shopping. But while you shop, remember why we have Christmas. It might help you to not lose your mind while out about the crowds. 🙂
Thank you for reading. God Bless.
