Story Time- She Won A Christmas Tree But What to Do?

My story times posts reach back to the past and this one is no exception. It reaches all of the way back to yesterday. 🙂 It is so fitting for Christmas.

Yesterday morning in my Family Literacy Class, the coordinator brought an artificial Christmas tree she didn’t need anymore. I noticed as soon as I opened the door and saw a large green bag laying on the floor. Before I could go next door to her room and say something like, “Why is there a large green bag on my floor?” she came in and told me we could raffle it off.

I had the students write their names on pieces of paper for the drawing. We drew the name and the winner?

She is all of MAYBE 5’1″ and is pregnant due in February. She just came to the U.S. one month ago and speaks a few words of English. She was so happy to win the tree. Then she looked at it and right away her eyes got real big. It was the look of a small pregnant woman suddenly realizing she had to get it home to her apartment somehow. She does not have a car and could not carry it.

As soon as he name was drawn, I knew she would need help. We arranged the help she needed. She has only been here one month and might now have much furniture yet, but she has a Christmas tree for Christmas. She is from Guatemala and does celebrate Christmas. Her family will have a Merry First Christmas in America.

How often do we experience the- What do I do now- thoughts and feelings. They can hit whether it is the result of something good or a problem. We can take comfort in knowing the God is never surprised. He knows before we do that we will need help. Jesus spoke about it in Matthew 6:

“And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Our heavenly Father knows everything before ask. He has the plan ready. He is never surprised.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. He does know our needs and often answers in unexpected ways. I’m glad she now has a tree for her first American Christmas! 🎄🎄🎄

  2. I had this feeling last year when I walked about 15mins to my church to get presents for my kids. I thought it would be one thing each and that I’d be able to carry it. NOPE my kids have more than three gifts each and they were covered in giant garbage bags. Two bags full of presents and I thought my God this is amazing then right away I was taken over by the fear of not knowing how I would get it home. The people in charge of overseeing the gifts decided that they’d take the presents to my home when they were done. I walked back home crying because I was so happy.
