In my evening Citizenship class, a mother brings her six year old daughter with her. Her daughter helps me pass out things to my students and I give her candy. When I give her the candy, I say give it to your mom and she will decide when it is okay to eat it.

This week she brought one of her stuffed animals with her- a bunny she named Amy. Towards the end of the class, I gave the girl some candy to give to her mom. Then she told me, “Amy wants some candy too.” I could see a serious negotiation tactic was being used by this sweet little six year old girl.

After I told her Amy did not need candy, the little girl propped Amy up on the table so her toy bunny was looking at me. It did not work. I told her bunnies should not eat candy. She smiled and said, “okay.”

When I interact with my students’ children, I often think about Jesus with the children blessing them. There is the famous account in Matthew 19:

“Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.”

“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.”

Jesus loves children and wants to be with them. He wants to bless children.

But I don’t think Jesus wants us to give children too much candy. 🙂

Thank you for reading. God Bless.
