Helping Others In This Time of Crisis

I have been thinking about ways that we who follow Jesus can help others during this time of crisis due to the COVID-19 Virus. I want to share some ideas and if you have ideas to add please share in comments or even better write a post.

We have the opportunity to show the love of Jesus in practical ways.

First of all pray. Pray for wisdom for leaders making hard decisions. Pray for an end to the virus. Pray for those infected and battling it. Pray for safety.

Think of ways to give a helping hand.

In the U.S. our public schools provide free breakfast and lunch for low income children. If schools are canceled, there is the risk of children experiencing hunger. We can donate to local foods banks and find ways to give food to children.

Universities are closing. We can look out for the needs of international students stuck with nowhere to go. We can offer assistance to students needing to go home. Perhaps help them with gas money or airfare. We can also let students store things in our homes that they do not have room for in their cars.

If we know of a family asked to self quarantine, we can drop off care packages at their doorstep. Dropping off at the door step with a note of encouragement to let them know we are praying for them and a phone number to contact us if they need something more dropped off. Important note- If we drop off at their doorstep without them coming to the door, we do not need to worry about exposure.

Check on neighbors who are not able to shop for a 2 to 3 week supply such as older neighbors who would have a difficult time carrying in heavy bags. Take them shopping or go shopping for them.

Do you have a friend who will be financially impacted due to lost wages? Perhaps help them out.

Do you have a friend having trouble getting home because of sudden travel restrictions? Offer to check on their homes for them and take care of plants and pets.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

I want to share a video with you that expresses my sentiment. It is by John Michael Talbot.

  1. Great ideas. I have some elderly neighbours. If the situation gets a bit worse where I am I’m hoping to offer to do shopping for them.

  2. It is a frightening time for many of the eldery that live alone, a friendly voice on the phone, a prayer, and an offer to pick up anything needed, can make their day. So many are in need, it is a good time to be God’s hands and feet. Your suggestions are great Matt, thanks!

  3. I agree with you! You brought in very solid points. I know international students who are often overlooked as well as kids who depend on free school lunches. We are called to be the hands and feet of our Lord and I think this is the time for us to shine! Thank you!

  4. Thank you for reminding us of people who may be overlooked and needing help like international students. There are so many opportunities to love and support others, simply and safely, if we pause and pray. The Holy Spirit has very personal ideas for each of us.

  5. Thank you for this post! Iā€™m sharing this with my father, who is a preacher, to help him with his sermon. May we all shine lights!

  6. These are great advice. One thing that stands out in all of this is that everyone especially the students need to have internet at home. Perhaps we can find ways to help those who cannot afford it or the internet providers should offer discount etc to people.
