“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
This quote is from a conversation Gandalf had with Frodo in the movie Fellowship of the Rings. They were in the mines inside a mountain and many things had already gone wrong. Frodo expressed his despair. Gandalf in his wisdom shared what he did.
It seems SO FITTING to what we are experiencing at this time. None of us wish the global pandemic had happened in our lifetime with all of the struggles we have had to endure. But that is not for us to decide.
What is for us to decide is what we will do with the time we are given. It reminds me of what Mordecai said to Esther in Esther 4 when things looked bleak for the Jewish people in captivity:
“For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
We do not choose the times we are born into or the troubles in the world during the time we live. But we can choose how we will respond. We can choose to show the love of Jesus. We can choose to be the hands of Jesus in this world.
I am not happy to see what is going on around me in the world. I really wish it had not happened in my lifetime. But God has a purpose for me in this time. The question is whether I want to partner with God in that purpose.
