Why I Wear A Mask

Teaching an ESL class for moms in an elementary school necessitates wearing a mask at this time. My city also has also made it mandatory to wear a mask in public buildings at least until the end of this month.

So yes I wear a mask to follow guidelines by the schools and the city. But that is not the main reason I wear one. I wore one before the mandate of the city.

Yes there has been differing information about the effectiveness of wearing masks and I know some view it as an attempt to control us.

I would say the phrase What Would Jesus Do, but then I thought he would go around healing people of COVID like he did for people of other diseases when he was on earth. I do not have the kind of power.

I come back to a principle in the bible in Romans 14. It is one that perhaps is not given enough due consideration:

“Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters.”

Yes, Jesus has brought me through so many difficult times in life including almost dying in the 1990s. I trust Jesus to bring me through any difficulty. But my faith has been put through the fires numerous times. I know that death, while not something I look forward to, is really graduation day from this life to heaven.

BUT

I also realize there are people who are very fearful at this time. My going around with a false bravado will not reassure anyone. It will also not help me to establish opportunities to share the love of Jesus.

By wearing a mask when I go out in public, it puts others at ease to be around me. So even though I am not 100% sure of the effectiveness of wearing one, I do know that by wearing one others will feel more at ease around me and what is a minor inconvenience for me can mean a lot to others I encounter.

It comes down to the message on the mask in my picture- Spread Kindness. Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit.

Thank you for reading. God Bless.

  1. I agree I wear a mask because the Bible says to obey the laws of the land. We have been asked to wear them when out in public. As well it protects others from me, and me them. 8 people have had Covid since my husband started back to work only 2 months ago. Both of his twin daughters at separate times in separate household got Covid. My mom works at the largest hospital in our area, and she would be so disappointed in me, knowing what she deals with daily if I did not wear my mask with my recent breast cancer. It is the next right thing to do, and that is why I wear a mask. It is the kind thing to do. I like your mask! Have a safe, blessed weekend! Lisa

  3. Matt, I appreciate your discussion. When I wear a mask, I am reminding others that I sincerely care about their health and safety. I was wearing one before it became a requirement here in Ohio. God’s peace to you!
